The UNU/BIOLAC network for infectious cattle diseases.
From 13 to 25 of November 2017 the “Instituto de Investigación en Salud Pública y Zoonosis” of the Universidad Central del Ecuador, organized the Theoretical/practical course on the diagnosis and epidemiology of emerging and re-emerging bacterial and parasitic diseases of cattle.
The course was financed by the BIOLAC program of the United Nations University (http://biolac-unu.net/)
The course focused on the diagnosis and control of emerging and re-emerging bacterial and parasites diseases of cattle: Bovine Tuberculosis, Paratuberculosis, Leptospirosis, Brucellosis, Leucosis, Neosporosis, Anaplasmosis, Babesiosis, and Trypanosomiasis.
Veterinarians and other personnel working on animal health, as well as investigators working in the diagnosis and control of these diseases in Latin-American and the Caribbean and coming from 11 countries participated in the course.
Four cattle herds form two different regions of Ecuador were screened for zoonotic or production limiting diseases. Different techniques were used for the diagnosis: Agglutination tests, ELISAs, and molecular biology techniques. In addition, personnel and dogs of the cattle farms were screened for the diseases. The diagnostic results of this course will be published in scientific journals.
The course also resulted in the formation of a scientific network in which the majority of the participants will take part (see below). The network was created to initiate future research projects between its members. The network also serves for recognizing its members in future publications. We consider that the publications as a result of this course should bear the names of all the participants, as all participants actively were involved in the course program. However, for practical reasons the list of authors would be too long for a scientific journal.
Future publications for this reason will mention only the names of the course lecturers and professors but with an extension: “on behalf of the UNU/BIOLAC network for infectious cattle diseases”, with a link to this webpage. For the same reason we consider that every person mentioned on this web page can use the publications with this extension for his or her curriculum.
